Note that The Binge-Watching Cure is open until December, but they're only taking one story of each specified length, and one of the categories is filled already, so if you want to sub to them, do so ASAP.

I planted a bunch of bulbs last fall, and the flowers are blooming all over the yard. :) Here are some samples:



The daffodils have been blooming for a couple of weeks now, and are still going strong. I also have a pot of them out next to the front door.

Scott William Carter, the guy who came up with the WIBBOW test (Would I Be Better Off Writing?) did a post about a metaphor he created, looking at writing/publishing activities as a table. The four legs are four activities you do as a writer, or actually any kind of creator, if you substitute art or music or whatever for writing:

Leg 1: What you write
Leg 2: How much you write
Leg 3: How much you learn
Leg 4: How you market

It's not complicated, but it's an interesting, and I think useful, way of thinking about what you want to do, how to focus, and how to balance your writing-related activities. Scott discusses each leg, how they support your work, and how it fits together. Check it out. (Scroll down a bit once you get to the page, about half way. Start at the paragraph right above the table diagram.)

It's been over two weeks since I got back from the Anthology Workshop. I meant to do a write-up about it before this, but I caught some kind of crud on the flight home (best as I can tell, looking at the likely incubation period) and I've only just gotten over the hacking and sniffling. I hate trying to sleep when my sinuses are clogged up; I think the sleep deprivation is worse than the actual hacking and sniffling. :P

Anyway. Great workshop as always. I only sold one story (an SF mystery to John Helfers for an anthology called No Humans Allowed,) but I had a great time anyway, and learned a lot. I had a chance to talk to a bunch of folks, get to know some new people and some people who've been around, but we just never had a chance to really sit down and chat before.

Procyon Press is doing an SF anthology that recently upgraded its pay rate, so it now qualifies to go onto the listing. But it has a deadline of 31 March, so next month's listing would come out kind of late for anyone who wanted to write a story for it, so I'm slipping this in, between times.

Tayen Lane is currently reading submissions for our first annual Procyon Science Fiction Anthology. This collection will feature the works of writers from across the world and will span multiple sub-genres within the science fiction genre.

Send us your best and most memorable stories. We want work that fascinates, provokes, intrigues.

Writer guidelines:

Submissions are open to writers from all countries; however, the submissions must be in English. The maximum word length of a submission is 7,000 words. Submissions must be unpublished. Please submit short stories as a Microsoft Word document (or PDF), double-spaced and in 12-pt font to scifi2016@tayenlane.com.

Submissions will remain open until 11:59pm PST, Thursday, March 31, 2016. The anthology is edited by Jeanne Thornton and will be published in hardcover in FALL 2016 with subsequent softcover and eBook editions to follow. All chosen contributors will receive $100, two hardcovers, two softcovers, and an eBook. Writers will maintain ownership of all copyrighted material.

[Note that Stiff Things has a deadline (1 March) but is also "Until Filled," which means it might close earlier if the editors get a lot of good subs right away. Possibly a lot earlier. If you want to sub there, I suggest you not put it off.]

So Emily Sears is a model, and like many models, she posts pics of herself online regularly. It's part of the job, building her reputation and brand, all that good stuff.

But there are dudes online who think it's just neato-kewl to send her pics of their penises, just... because? I don't even know. Do these guys really think some woman they've never met is going to look at a crappy phone-pic of their junk and think, "OMG I wanna this guy to bang me hard!!" Really? [eyeroll]

Eventually Ms. Sears got sick of this crap, and decided to start doing something about it. She looked at the guy's online profile, and found his wife or girlfriend, and sent her a screenshot of what the guy sent, with a note saying she thought the woman should be aware of what her husband/boyfriend was doing online.

I think this is an awesome solution. :) A friend of Ms. Sears, a DJ named Laura, who also gets dick pics on a regular basis, has started doing the same thing.

Good stuff, click through and read about it. The comments are actually worth reading too. I particularly like the one where a woman tells about how, when she was fourteen, some dude sent her a dick pic and she sent him a picture of cutting a banana. [smirk] I hope that had him crossing his legs for a while.

Ferret Steinmetz wrote a great blog post about love languages, and how they can cause conflict in a relationship. If you and your partner speak different love languages -- if the way you recognize that someone loves you isn't the same as the way your partner recognizes that someone loves them -- you might end up splitting, each convinced the other doesn't love them, when actually they're just showing it differently. If your partner can't translate your code, you might as well not be communicating at all.

This is good relationship advice, but it's also an awesome way to add conflict to a romance novel or story, without making one or the other of the characters evil or stupid or the bad guy. Check it out.
